Description
Seashore – Mixed Media
From “Walking Into Eternity”- a Joycean-Themed Exhibition 9th to 20th June
I originally started “Seashore” when I was living in Bangalore, India (2000 to 2007). It started out as an abstract painting and was one of my first attempts at non-representational art. However, it came to a halt before it was finished and as I couldn’t figure out what to do next! I just kept it in my studio, taking it out from time to time. It took a while for me to realize that it was not going to be resolved by ‘thinking’. It required something more. Often, abstract paintings take on a life of their own and it is up to the artist to ‘listen’ to the painting. In this way the work process becomes an intuitive one rather than a mental one. Once I had grasped this concept I found that this became a normal way for me to work in the future, whether I am working on something abstract or representational.
While living in India I started to experiment with collage, using hand-made rice and silk paper. The fibres in these papers added a texture to the underlying watercolour. As the glue process requires the use of an acrylic medium, I incorporate acrylic paint and ink, and also dry chalk pastel.
As the painting developed I began to sense the shapes and sounds of the sea. This made the abstract subject into a more representational painting while retaining a dream-like quality. Living in India took me away from my natural home environment and I really missed the changing seasons and our beautiful coastline of Killiney Bay where I spent my youth. Working intuitively, I was painting a part of my memories which linked me to home. The painting was finished some years ago when I had returned to Ireland.
The painting didn’t start out as a tribute to Joyce’s works. However, so much of Joyce’s writing incorporates images of the sea and I felt that it would be appropriate to include this piece in our Joycean-themed exhibition as I identified so strongly with the descriptions of where I grew up.
