Artist's Description
The working title for this painting was "Still Life in Green and Gold". It started out as many of my paintings do, with just a couple of objects placed together that have complimentary colours and shapes. The composition is fairly set and changes little from the outset. However, it is in the painting of the still life that the magic starts to happen where shapes emerge or disappear with subtle watercolour effects. A postcard of Klimt's 'The Kiss' appears, propped up between two shapes. I had been working on some Klimt designs for a client and it seemed natural for it to creep into my other work too. The quiet meditative mood needed for the small details led me to spend extra time on the small forget-me-nots in the woman's hair and at her feet. The mauve-blue of the flower, helped to balance the warm golds and greens of the overall painting. I realised that the nostalgic and somewhat sentimental mood of the painting was best described by the name of the flower, Forget-me-not.

I first became attracted to watercolour over 30 years ago on a painting holiday in Cornwall. I loved the immediacy and fluidity of the medium. When I painted the old rooftops of the quirky yet beautiful old buildings, colours ran together giving an organic feel to the moss and old slates. I felt like I'd discovered a magic colouring book! The watercolour captured the essence of my subjects in an ethereal way. Enchanted by the possibilities of creating a new, dream-like reality within my paintings, I developed my style with an emphasis on the effects I could achieve with Watercolour, by letting the paint and water form patterns in their own way.
